Nova Literary-Arts Magazine is a publication led by students at UNC Charlotte. It is released every year to showcase the creative work of artists and writers from across the world. For the 56th issue, we asked ourselves the question, what is Nova? and what does that look like? Starting from the Nova rebrand, there were common themes that were galactic, spacey, or dream related within each volume that seemed to be a hard mold to break out of. So, for this year's edition, the entire team wanted to create something out of the box that people haven't seen before.
So for this year's issue, our design team centered the theme around the idea of "nostalgia". Throughout the magazine, we featured late 90s – early 2000s Windows graphics, grid lines, and funky, vibrant 3D shapes to create this fun other world or time the audience is able to step into as they're reading it. As they flip through the pages, they'll see more of these window pop-ups, 3D shapes, and a scroll bar that goes down following them as they enter this new space. As a design team, we wanted to create something that was not only interesting to look at, but build a whole experience that can be enjoyed and appreciated.
